IBM Interview Experience - KOLKATA, FEB 21, 2016

IBM Interview Experience - KOLKATA, FEB 21, 2016

IBM - Interview experience.

Hi, I am Debarun Dey. I am 2016 pass out from JIS College of Engineering,
Kalyani in ECE. Studying B-Tech came by chance as I wanted to be a doctor (I
experienced some personal set backs). I struggled 2years. I had serious
health complications. I also used crutch at a time. At a point no one took
me as a serious student. Even my family had lost faith in me at that time.
But I was determined to prove them wrong. I tried hard. I sat for CAT in
2016 without any preparation and it was another disaster. My confidence
level was almost zero. TCS came for for placement. I managed to crack the
apti level. It came as a surprise to others.

But unfortunately I was eliminated in the PI round and that pushed my
confidence down further. Every thing was Ok in that interview. But it was
very surprise to me. Then other companies came and left. I managed to clear
most of the aptitude tests but final conversion was becoming difficult to
me. Then I started for preparing CAT, 13 seriously. This action proved very
fertile. I started to regain my lost confidence. But constant family
pressure was there. The CAT result was medium. I managed to get call from
some tier 2 Bschools. Then at that time I got mails from several companies.
I cleared the CTS aptitude test conducted by AMCAT. But didn't sit for the
interview.

One day COCUBES sent me a mail containing info about IBM drive. I heard that
IBM drive is one of the toughest (they have several stages) yet finest. So I
went for the Cocubes test in Techno-India. Cleared the apti screening. Then
IBM conducted their own infamous series and logic test. 20 series and 20
apti questions were there. After the test they told that I haven't cleared.
But after few weeks they informed me again that "you are selected for
further round of test". I thanked God. The 2nd test or English test was
conducted at Narula, our sister college. The environment was familiar. The
test was to test the managerial skills like documentation, punctuation, some
decision making etc. It was very easy to me because earlier I had practiced
a lot before my XAT exam. And at the end of the day I was selected.

Then I got the mail for interview after few weeks. My best friend
Shambo(FIEM) earlier attended the interview but couldn't cleared to cleared
the interview. He helped me a lot from his experience. The interview was
scheduled on FEB 21 in Techno.

At the beginning an Hr Mam told that not to be worried and to relax (I never
seen like this fantastic kind of HRs). After submitting the copies an IBM
guy called my name. I was first in my panel.

I entered the room. The HR offered me cold drink and coffee. But I turned
down with humble approach. He saw my CV and said "Man why you came here. You
are made for MBA (I have a lot of extra curricular like working with N.G.Os,
publishing socioeconomic article, case studies etc etc). ". But I said no
sir as of now I like to use my skills that I have earned after 16 years of
students life. Then he said "do you have any dependent family members?". I
said no. Then he said why ECE, why software etc. Then he gave to solve 5
puzzles. I solved all. Then he asked simple questions on projects some basic
level sorting-searching questions. At the end he asked who is your favorite
footballer (I mentioned that I am a die hard soccer fan). I said my all time
favorites includes Paolo Maldini, Zidane and Figo. He said tell me only one
name. I said "Maldini".

Then he said why a defender instead of the forwards and goalscorers. I said
"Sir football is a team work. Every member is vital, every member has to do
his own duty. Apart from being a great defender. He was a true class leader
in his teams A. C Milan and Italy. You know after his departure Ac Milan is
declining. But Italy was OK in Canavaro and Buffon's hand. Maldini's
leadership is felt in every Milan game. "After my answer I found the HR
staring at me in a surprising smile. And at the last he shook my handwith
the line" welcome to IBM man". I quietly left the room.

Few Tips for aspirants.

1. IBM hrs are the best interviewers. They are very friendly. So don't be
scared. Don't lie. Be humble.

2. If you are not so good in technical not be scared. They test your
managerial approach, how you convince others. If they gave a problem (like
programs in C) and you don't know that fully then try to write the algo or
in steps.

3. Don't overexpose yourself. Give them respect (they earned their respect
that's why they are in the chair). Some So called "DADAS" of colleges suffer
for it.

4. Be suave and amiable. If you find your HR is busy with mobile or laptop
don't you ever think he is not watching you.

5. Don't lost hope if you fail. Try to keep you attitude and confidence in
high (but don't show them keep it with you).

6. Try to practice maths and apti's from 2nd year on wards. If you cannot
qualify in the preliminary rounds then certainly your vast subject knowledge
will not help.
