MELAB or Michigan English Language Assessment Battery
What is MELAB?

The Michigan English Language Assessment Battery or MELAB evaluates advanced-level English language competence of adult non-native speakers of English. The MELAB is taken by students who are seeking admission to USA, Canada, British and other countries offering education in English. The test is also taken by professionals for proving their English skills.

What is the format of the exam?

The MELAB tests an individual on 4 basic skills i.e. Writing, Listening, Reading and Speaking. The test is of 2 and a half to 3 and a half duration and consists of written composition, listening comprehension test and a multiple-choice test containing grammar, close reading, vocabulary and reading comprehension problems.

The speaking test under MELAB, though, is an optional test. It is required for some professional certification programmes and also for the applicants of the University of Michigan.
