What is ECCE?

ECCE or Examination for the Certificate of Competency in English

 What is ECCE?

ECCE or the Examination for the Certificate of Competency in English is yet another high intermediate examination along with TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, MELAB and CPE to prove the competency of English as a foreign language by a student applying for education abroad.

A student can use the ECCE certificate as an evidence of high-intermediate competence in English for personal, public, educational and professional purposes. The ECCE stands at B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and is valid for the lifetime. There is no cap on number of times a student can appear for the test.

What is the format of ECCE?

The ECCE tests a student’s skills in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The duration of the examination is 3 hours. The details are mentioned below:

Grammar (multiple choice)

An incomplete sentence is followed by a choice of words or phrases to complete it. Only one choice is grammatically correct.

Vocabulary (multiple choice)

An incomplete sentence is followed by a choice of words or phrases to complete it. Only one word has the correct meaning in that context.

Reading (multiple choice)

Part 1: A short reading passage is followed by comprehension questions.

Part 2: Two sets of four texts related to each other by topic are followed by 10 questions.

Writing

30 minutes

The test taker reads a short excerpt from a newspaper article and then writes a letter or essay giving an opinion about a situation or issue.

How is a student scored under ECCE?

The ECCE test if scored electronically by CaMLA (a non-profit collaboration between the University of Michigan and the University of Cambridge).

The ECCE section scores are reported in five bands. These levels of performance, from highest to lowest are:
